Rainbow Ukes for Youth
September 25th - 27th 2026
Downtown Olympia
Thanks to the generosity of GALA choruses, Sound Mosaic is proud to announce that The Rainbow Ukes for Youth initiative is officially launching to bring inclusive, joyful music-making directly to local youth. Supported by new grant funding, this community outreach program connects young musicians with high-quality ukuleles, hands-on instruction, and an encouraging space to explore their creativity.
Designed to remove financial and technical barriers to arts education, each participant receives their own beautiful instrument, essential accessories, and guided, beginner-friendly workshops that build confidence through song. Whether strumming their very first chord or collaborating in group performances, youth of all backgrounds and experience levels are invited to find their voice, build lasting community connections, and experience the pure fun of making music together.
On Friday evening, every youth participant will get a FREE UKULELE to keep! We'll also provide lots of art supplies so you can decorate and customize your ukulele to express your style.
Members of the Rainbow Ukes Troupe from the Sound Mosaic choir have already decorated our ukuleles, so we can share some inspiration and tips below.
Once the instruments are decorated and dried, we'll spend Saturday learning songs together. We'll provide a songbook, thoughtfully created by our members, and tell stories about the artists and meanings of the songs. We'll practice chords, strumming, and singing together in an environment where there is no pressure, only encouragement to enjoy! Music is an incredible pathway to resilience, connection, and expression.
On Sunday, we'll practice some more, and then we'll invite our loved ones to join us and celebrate our progress. The performance will be informal and fun, and youth are totally welcome to sit it out if they don't feel ready or comfortable. We envision an intergenerational jam session to uplift us and give us that spark of joy for these very tough times.
